Judgement Day

Alternately Discworld story and scientific explanation, this is a tried and tested format. It's also a little tired. This time we are thinking about science and religion (belief). The thinking about science is reasonable clear, while I am no science expert I am a keen hobbyist and read a lot, even so some of it wasn't that well explained. Belief, on the other hand, wasn't thought about at all, except that it is seen as irrational, and some very pointed examples of how this worked against the common good. As I read this in very short bursts, over a very long period, I probably have a more negative view, but it seemed to me that the story parts were rather contrived, and lacked the interest of the earlier books. Time to call it a day and not bother with book 5?

Still, just about worth a read.

Quarto - e presumibilmente ultimo... - volume della scienza del mondo disco, questo libro mi ha un po' deluso. La ragione è presto detta: mentre i libri precedenti spiegavano ciascuno un tema ben specifico - rispettivamente lorigine dell'universo,la nascita delle cultuhre e la teoria darwiniana dell'evoluzione - in questo caso non vedo un tema vero e proprio, ma più che altro un aggiornamento di quello che era stato scritto in precedenza. Questo porta i due - Pratchett come sempre si limita alle paginette della storia del Discworld che fa da cornice e spunto alle spiegazioni scientifiche - a essere molto più aneddotici, e fin qui nulla di male; ma li porta anche a spingersi a volte un po' troppo oltre la scienza. Prendiamo per esempio la loro refutazione del principio antropico. Non ci sarebbe stato nulla di strano se avessero parlato del principio antropico forte, quello per cui l'universo è fatto così perché è fatto per noi; ma hanno scientemente aggiunto al mucchio il principio antropico debole, quello che dice che l'universo è fatto così perché siamo noi a poterlo vedere e non afferma nulla su altri possibili universi: gli è insomma piaciuto giocare facile. In definitiva, se non siete dei completisti forse vi conviene leggere gli altri tre volumi e tralasciare questo.
