La scrittura di Markely è davvero coinvolgente tanto che non ho abbandonato il libro. Ciò che secondo me non funziona molto è che è la trama orizzontale è troppo abbozzata, si vedono solo le vite dei 4 protagoniste tagliate tra passato e presente, i loro traumi, le loro vite più o meno disperate, la provincia americana tragicamete distrutta dalla crisi del 2008, la rabbia montante e spesso già latente che poi sfocia nel terrorismo interno, nella violenza razziale e di genere ben prima della vittoria di Trump. Il problema è che per raccontare questo, secondo me ma chi sono io per dirlo, le 540 pagine sono proprio troppe. Più volte mi sono trovato a pensare che il personaggio era stato ben tratteggiato (e spesso davvero bene) ma che l'autore si stesse crogiolando un po' nel dolore dei suoi personaggi. Come per il reduce Dan o l'attivista Bill. La brava Stacey …

Tina invece è il capitolo migliore e, a memoria, mi sembra quello della lunghezza giusta. Infine il livello di retorica è troppo troppo alto, sopratutto nell'ultimo capitolo nel quale finalmente la trama orizzontale si mette davvero in moto ma a quel punto sembra una chiusura sbrigativa. Insomma è una versione molto molto molto meno riuscita de Il giorno dell'ape che, per assurdo, essendo più lungo da più spazio a una trama orizzontale che avvince e mi ha tenuto legato al libro
