Fellow fedizens! As decreed by https://xkcd.com/843/ some fifteen years ago, it is once again time to spend the morning reading through the Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_misconceptions.
True, but surprising to see in 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦:
"#Wikipedia is needed now more than ever, 25 years on."
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-00074-1
"The online encyclopedia is an antidote to an increasingly poisoned information ecosystem. Researchers should help to nourish it."

.@brooke Remember this "temporary" banner for en.wikipedia from 2009? Wikipedia got a native mobile redirect in 2011, and we removed this banner from en.wikipedia long before then.
Yet, this banner was (sometimes) visible as recent as today on the Eastern Min Chinese-language Wikipedia. It was never deployed there by us, and actually only started there in.. 2015? (1/2)
I’ve spent the better part of two decades dealing with people trying to dox and harass the volunteers who make Wikipedia the incredible resource it is today.
I liked it better when they weren’t in Congress.

e paghiamo profumatamente queste aziende
- quelloffene Software
- offene Standards
- offene Daten
- offene Inhaltssammlungen

I have been using `site:mybank.com [search terms]` semi-sucessfully, though most of the search engines are increasingly bad.
mojeek.com is increasingly better.
Sadly, en.wikipedia.org is increasingly the best web search engine over-all. Naturally, that is not #Wikipedia's purpose.

A little over a year ago I wrote a #Wikipedia article about the "Goose and the Common", an 18th century poem about the privatization of #commons land during the enclosures in England:

My partner just started reading "Sunrise on the Reaping", the second prequel to the #HungerGames trilogy, which quotes the poem. Page views jumped up 3X when the book was published in March, and are still greatly elevated. So I guess the internet is not fully dead yet :)

I had the dumbest conversation of my entire life.
I told someone how #tariffs work, specifically that they are charged to American companies, and are essentially a tax on them which turns into a tax on the consumer when the company raises prices, and don't make money.
They told me I was wrong, and then I sent them the #wikipedia link which said what I said.
They told me Wikipedia was liberal #propaganda and couldn't be trusted.
I gave up and blocked them

What do folks think about the "Edge Uniques" cookie being proposed for Wikimedia wikis?
There is a write up at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Edge_Uniques and a blog post at https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/04/09/using-privacy-engineering-to-enable-modern-usability-testing-and-defend-against-network-attacks/ where you can start exploring the topic if it is new to you.
