These are the beautiful spore-producing structures of plasmodial slime molds. Which is your favourite colour?
Originally considered Fungi, these Myxomycetes are now classed as Amoebozoans - single celled organisms with thousands of nuclei... not animals or fungi but something else entirely!

Earth Star mushrooms are wonderful, looking like flowers with petals. This was the best I've seen this year.
Pd. Earth Star is a great name đ
The genetic prison that traps a ghost plant https://botany.one/2025/06/the-genetic-prison-that-traps-a-ghost-plant/ paper: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/pei3.70060
"M. humile gets energy from #fungi... Even though they donât photosynthesise, ghost #plants still have leaves... it must have a flower to attract the #insects & get pollinated. But this leads to a genetic problem. The petals and sepals are specialised forms of leaf. Some of the genes that shape the petals and sepals also work on the ghost plantâs leaves... Without the leaves there is no flower."

đ° "Scientists in Germany have discovered fungi that can actually eat plastic.
Researchers from the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin found microfungi capable of breaking down synthetic plastics, potentially giving us a new tool to tackle the massive amounts of waste that end up in oceans and landfills every year."

The teeming life of dead #trees: Rotting logs turn out to be vital to forest #biodiversity and recycling organic matter https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/living-world/2025/rotting-logs-mini-ecosystems-habitat-and-food
"Wood-decay #fungi can be remarkably territorial. Cut through a rotten log, and youâll often see black lines running through the wood. Thatâs melanin which fungi use to protect themselves against other, intruding fungi. Those are the regions where fungal mycelia are bumping up against each other and basically battling for turf"
I found a face in the fungi! And you know me by now, I do like to share a found face. Sorry about that đŹ
I have mentioned before, that with my #ADHD, I'm either super distracted or completely focused.
Regarding the recent Emerg Alert, my wife said she was minutes away from calling in my disappearance when I took my camera before daylight & went for a 25 kms walk.
My phone was going dead. I was gone hours.
That's not the only time I've done that. I forget the time, and am engrossed in nature taking #fungi photos and nature shots with my camera.
One day, the alerts will be for me.
A vast underground network of fungi has been supporting life above ground for 450 million years, but the recent discovery by scientists, including researchers from the University of Sheffield, that fungi is storing OVER ONE THIRD OF THE CARBON created from fossil fuel emissions each year indicates that it could be crucial as nations seek to tackle climate change and reach net zero emissions
