By collecting evidence from multiple #gene families in multiple biological systems and focusing on the features which distinguish eukaryotes from prokaryotes, researchers were able to begin to piece together the developmental pathway for complex life.

They obtained evidence that the transition began almost 2.9 billion years ago – almost a billion years earlier than by some other estimates – suggesting that the nucleus and other internal structures appear to have evolved significantly before #mitochondria.

The process of cumulative complexification seems to have taken place over a much longer time period than previously thought.

A single, delicate mushroom with a slim, straight stem emerges from a soft carpet of green moss. Centred against a smooth, blurred, light-green background, it creates a calm, dreamlike atmosphere. The small, dome-shaped cap is pale brown with a slightly frayed edge. Fine strands of spider silk stretch diagonally from the stem towards the right, catching the light like faint silver lines. In the bottom left corner, a tiny spider hangs beside the moss stalks. The depth of field is very shallow: the mushroom is in sharp focus, while the foreground moss and the entire background melt into creamy bokeh circles. The composition is vertical and uncluttered, with the mushroom placed slightly off-centre and negative space filling most of the frame with bokeh circles.

I'm sure someone will tell me what this fungus is. All I can tell you is it seemed very keen on this tree stump.

A tree stump is festooned (love that word) with a fungus that I am sure will be identified by an enthusiasts. All I know it is a load of browny red caps with white flecks on and in a ring around the edges of each one. There are probably over a hundred layered around the edge of the stump in various sizes (average about 20cm across), but the top of it is relatively free of them. There are brambles growing on the surrounding forest floor and interwined in the fungus.

"M. humile gets energy from #fungi... Even though they don’t photosynthesise, ghost #plants still have leaves... it must have a flower to attract the #insects & get pollinated. But this leads to a genetic problem. The petals and sepals are specialised forms of leaf. Some of the genes that shape the petals and sepals also work on the ghost plant’s leaves... Without the leaves there is no flower."

Deep in the woods, a dead tree trunk still stands. It is about 5 feet high and has a splintered top, almost crown looking top where the majority of the tree snapped off. There is a good amount of moss at its base. Located smack in the middle of the bark that faces the camera are 3 very old shelf mushrooms forming a face - 2 on top creating eyes and one just below creating a nose, or mouth, your choice. The background of the woods is blurred out to call attention to the tree.
