Sarcastico e pungente come suo solito, Pratchett in questo libro fa una riflessione satirica sulle religioni ed i finti profeti.
Un piccolo dio caduto in disgrazia a causa della carenza di credenti, si ritrova senza poteri ed imprigionato nella forma di una tartaruga. Inizia quindi ad affrontare una pericolosa avventura col suo unico credente rimasto (Brutha) nel mezzo di una guerra santa voluta dalla sua stessa chiesa che, ormai snaturata, presta più attenzione alla rigida gerarchia piuttosto che alla fede stessa.
