For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.
And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.
Very gothic old school style horror complete with a crumbling house up a mountain, shrouded in mist and riddled with mycelium. I found this very creepy and engrossing, and the details of the mystery at hand kept me wondering.
This ended up being the third of 4 stories I read this year that were all variations on the Fall of the House of Usher (including the original), and I think it's my favourite. The slow pace with which the protagonist (and by extension us the readers) learn what exactly is up with the house felt realistic and made for great tension because there's such a long period in which it's clear that something is Very Wrong but not what it is. And along the way Moreno-Garcia gets in some choice digs about what colonisers are and do, including to themselves and each other. Deliciously gruesome.

Mexican Gothic è il classico romanzo senza infamia e senza lode: è scritto sufficientemente bene da essere godibile, ma non così tanto da essere memorabile. Potrebbe essere una buona lettura da ombrellone, visto che stiamo andando verso il caldo e magari vi va qualcosa di gotico e oscuro.
In generale, Mexican Gothic è ben congegnato e riesce molto bene a trasmettere l’orrore di una casa che imprigiona e di una famiglia disposta a fare qualunque nefandezza pur di mantenere saldo il proprio potere e ritornare ai presunti fasti del passato. Ho molto apprezzato il fatto che non sia solo una storia di una povera fanciulla ingenua vittima dell’amore per l’uomo sbagliato, ma ci siano intrecciati sia il razzismo sia lo sfruttamento della classe operaia e che tutto questo concorre a creare dellз villain assolutamente rivoltanti (il capofamiglia, in …

In generale, Mexican Gothic è ben congegnato e riesce molto bene a trasmettere l’orrore di una casa che imprigiona e di una famiglia disposta a fare qualunque nefandezza pur di mantenere saldo il proprio potere e ritornare ai presunti fasti del passato. Ho molto apprezzato il fatto che non sia solo una storia di una povera fanciulla ingenua vittima dell’amore per l’uomo sbagliato, ma ci siano intrecciati sia il razzismo sia lo sfruttamento della classe operaia e che tutto questo concorre a creare dellз villain assolutamente rivoltanti (il capofamiglia, in particolare, credo che rappresenti bene l’idea di vecchio bavoso, mentre suo figlio Virgil pare la vendetta a tutti i bei tenebrosi creepy che ci sono stati rifilati nel tempo).
Purtroppo però a fare da contraltare a tutta questa malvagità non c’è una costruzione dei personaggi positivi altrettanto efficace. Noemí, per esempio, nonostante sia la protagonista e ci venga descritta come una ragazza di mondo, non riesce affatto a tenere testa ai membri della famiglia Doyle. Inoltre, ci viene detto più volte del suo interesse per l’antropologia, che potrebbe essere utile nei dibattiti con le idee rivoltanti dellз Doyle, non ha praticamente alcuna funzione all’interno della storia e si finisce per chiedersi perché Moreno-Garcia l’abbia inserito con questa pervicacia.
Penso che una caratterizzazione migliore di Noemí e Catalina avrebbe dato più spessore a Mexican Gothic e ci avrebbe anche fatto dimenticare il colpo di scena chiamatissimo (e se lo è per me che non leggo molti horror, figuriamoci per un*appassionatǝ). Però sono contenta di averlo letto: penso che terrò d’occhio gli altri lavori di Moreno-Garcia, perché è lì lì per essere davvero molto brava.

Mareno-Garcia presents a lush and atmospheric excursion into the gothic genre. Noemí Taboada is a wealthy strong-willed Mexican socialite who finds herself playing the uncanny hero after receiving a bewildering letter from her cousin, Catalina. The letter propels Noemí to travel to her cousin’s new home, High Place – an isolated English-style mansion – to check on Catalina’s mysterious behavior. Noemi is greeted by moldy wallpaper and in-laws bent on eugenics. Her stay at High Place only feels more and more menacing with each passing night as the unimaginable horrors become more and more richly detailed. Recommended for avid horror or suspense readers who just finished and loved “The Death of Jane Larence” by Caitlin Startling or “Tripping Arcadia” by Kit Mayquist for the creepy underpinnings and culturally diverse characters.
