This Caldecott Honor book of 1987, ALA Notable Book and School Library Journal Best Book is the retelling of Grimm’s fairy tale Rumplestiltskin. The text and illustrations by Paul O. Zelinsky transports you to a very far away land, a long time ago when magic and kingdoms were part of everyday life. This version of the traditional fairy tale is suitable for children in late elementary (2-5), the story follows the interactions between the miller’s daughter and a strange little man that helps her become queen by turning straw into gold. The little man asks for the girl’s first born son as reward, unless the queen can guess his name. The illustrations are oil paintings that you could easily find in a museum, the hyperrealistic paintings support readers’ imagination of the era when this story was part of the oral traditions. The text is written from the perspective of the miller’s daughter, but how would the story change if it were Rumpelstiltskin telling it, or the king?
